Physical. Chemical. Biological ... Quality compost cares for all three fractions of soil productivity.

Soil physical characteristics influence crop yields and quality in many ways. We've all seen those spots where heavy alkaline clays limit our results in growing the crops we want. Physical factors include the balance of sand, silt, and clay particles, how those particles aggregate together, and all those factors determine the way water and nutrients move through the soil matrix. Compost has a dual action in improving soil physical characteristics. It loosens up heavy clay soils and also improves sandy soils by increasing the water and nutrient holding capacities. In our western soils and arid climates, compost provides a remarkable difference in how much water is needed to raise a quality crop. We have documented yield increases in alfalfa even after reducing irrigation by 40%.

Soil chemical characteristics are the ones we usually equate with soil fertility. We add nitrogen and phosphate to our soils in the hope that our crops will respond. That's a good start, but we shouldn't stop there. There are other crucial elements in growing a good crop. These are elements that if you were to go buy individually would quickly eat any profits they might bring. Compost is a great way to get these vital elements back in your soil economically (if you only buy it for the N & P, the rest of the elements are free). These elements are also linked to humic acids and other chelating agents that make it easier for your plants to get the nutrients, while at the same time protecting them from leaching.

Soil biological characteristics are probably the least understood and perhaps the most important. Soil microbes cycle nutrients and organic matter, and have been linked to disease suppression in soils. These microbes, when properly cared for, can be the biggest difference in a farming operation. Tillage practices, fertilizer additions, and crop rotations, along with many other factors, influence this fraction of our soils. The renowned soil microbiologist S.D. Garrett stated the following, "The research worker and the farmer on his fields can do NOTHING to the soil that does not induce some change in the activity and balance of its microbial population." Compost is the best way to introduce beneficial soil microbes to your fields. Compost grows, houses, feeds, and delivers beneficial microbes to the field better than any other medium because it perfectly mimics the soil environment.

PHARMGRADE COMPOST TEA

Pharmgrade compost tea has fast become a buzz-word in both agriculture and horticulture. It solubilizes the nutrient fraction of the compost, while at the same time acting as a carrier for the biological fraction. The ease of application through the irrigation water, spray rig, or through a spray plane make this part of a total soil and plant care program complete. Some of the natural benefits associated with the use of compost tea are as follows:

  • Natural predation of disease causing organisms including root-feeding nematode
  • Increased ability of your soils to provide plant-available nutrients
  • High humic acid content
  • Higher water infiltration rate
  • Improved nutrient conversion of organic matter

TRUECOMPOST

Truecompost - Our name says it all. We have taken premium feedstocks and composted them beyond EPA 503 standards for high-end applications. Our truecompost line of premium products has been used by area golf courses as a fertilizer and water conservation agent. Those wanting to increase soil fertility of topsoils being applied to large building projects use our products to pro-actively reduce the need for chemical fertilizer later. By building soil using compost, we increase the natural ability of our soils to cycle vital nutrients that are not usually available to our plants because of several chemical bonds. The nutrients found in compost are chelated by humic acids and other organic molecules for greater plant availability. The beneficial soil microbes inherent to each gram of our compost carry out vital functions from controlling disease-causing organisms to boosting available nutrient levels by transforming elements that are tied-up to plant available forms. Topdressing existing grass areas with truecompost truly brings them to life.

PHARMGRADE PHINISHER

Toward the end of the growing season, crops struggle to obtain the needed nutrient to finish. Metabolic rates and photosynthetic potential diminish as the crop matures. PHINISHER is a blend of Pharmgrade Tea and the required nutrient, growth facilitators and hormone actuators to stimulate and bulk your crop. The last three weeks of the season will tell the tale. Storability depends on the plants ability to obtain and utilize these cellular building blocks. The market demands the highest quality and the farm economy requires high yields. Prepare your crop for a big finish. PHINISH IT!
